Iron Egress: Beyond the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade

Photo by I.am_nah on Unsplash March 29th, 2022 Afro-Latina; in this dream, I only remember that I had been discussing this kind of ethnic heritage with someone, but I’m not sure of the context. During the conversation, I even remember seeing the visage of an Afro-Latina woman with honey-colored skin and a big curly afro. The dream changed tones quite dramatically from here when a disembodied voice said, “research the white slaves of Egypt, Asia, and other countries.” In the waking world, I decided to research the white slave trade in Egypt and found it fascinating indeed.  The articles I've read speak of the Circassian slaves of Egypt from Georgia and the Barbary slave trade that involved peoples from Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy, Iceland, Southwest Britain, and the Eastern Mediterranean. Both of these were said by some to have lasted hundreds of years. As I continued my search, I only found more information on human trafficking that I didn't know I didn't know. Among...

Afro-American Zeitgeist

Photo by Ali Hajian on Unsplash The Afro-American Zeitgeist : A Summary of Unconscious Thoughts on Race (Part 1) July 30th, Passionless Bliss : "I am not afraid of death because death is invisible. If I can't see where it's going or what it is doing, is it doing anything at all? However, I am afraid of empty buildings because they confirm the reality of death's existence." Or, in simpler terms, Ignorance is bliss until reality hits. My dreams began by directly addressing my unwillingness to look into the deaths of African-Americans across the country. Despite my lack of knowledge, I became seriously opinionated about the nature of the incidents themselves, almost refusing to consider blackness as a factor. However, after the first dream, I began an investigation to prove blackness had nothing to do with these deaths. In the following paragraphs, I will take you through the sequence of dreams, which forced me to come to the conclusions, or at least my current stan...

Manifest Destiny

Photo by Lerone Pieters on Unsplash October 13 : I was a supernatural bounty hunter/warden, driving with my team to a wanted criminal's location. One of my teammates (Nick, I think) was a convict; apparently, it was normal for him to help us catch criminals that the police were struggling to find and arrest. Nick was in jail because of a drug addiction he was struggling to kick; oftentimes, he would be in jail for three-month increments, long enough for him to become clean. However, after being released, he'd go back to his old neighborhood with all the drugs and find himself in a jail cell all over again. He was a very nice guy stuck in a cycle he could not break and an environment that made true change realistically impossible. A woman came along with Nick and me, she informed us who we were looking for. That night, the bounty we were seeking to collect was a man that had successfully alluded the police for a long time. The man was rich and obviously a crime lord of sorts...

Try Anyways

Thank you Shellie Summers for the artwork! September 21 In this first dream;  People lived under a dome for a long time that covered their whole town (Outside was snow). The first part of this dream had a very beautiful stop motion animation look that was absolutely gorgeous. The dome over the town was clear, anyone on the outside could see everything happening on the inside. S omehow, zombies got inside the dome and began destroying our sanctuary. A father and son managed to escape the dome, traveling towards a new city. On the journey they met a police officer who joined their crew, followed by another person later on. With each person, there was an introduction slide card. I struggled to read them. The dream was no longer a stop-motion situation. On the way to the sanctuary, zombies began to appear, running like animals on all fours to keep up with us and the police escort that was suddenly following us. A fight broke out between us and them, it did not go well.  Just outs...

Monsters & Men

September 3 There were two kingdoms at war with each other, but it was not the people who fought the battles. It was a King from both sides, a group of princes, and a princess on each side. One nation was the human side; this was the kingdom I followed. The other was full of monsters with human qualities. After a very intense skirmish that occurred just a few minutes prior, the beast-men wandered into our territory on the hunt for some form of retribution for our assault. From a hideout in the caves, we looked down upon the beast and plotted our next move. The young King decided that he would take a smaller group from among the bunch, princes only, and invade the neighboring kingdom a second time with much darker intentions than before. He did not want to tell the princess of his plan, nor his advisor (another prince), knowing full well that they would oppose him. He was right.  "This is more than a war between nations; it is a war within yourself. Don't do this. " the w...

Black & White

A big thanks to my friend Shellie Summers for the artwork! August 29 I debated for several days about posting this dream. I was so conflicted about it that in my dream last night, I was confronted by my dad who told me to go ahead and post it - so I will. In this incredibly short dream, I was listening to a woman who was visibly upset and venting her frustration to me in regards to her ethnic Identity. She looked white, but she was black. Her frustration was centered around a conversation she had with an African-American man who denied her African heritage due to her white s kin tone. After lending her my ear in a random grocery store, I found myself shocked to hear that she was black, "Was she speaking about the ‘one-drop rule’ or something?" Of course, I am pretty sure she was not talking about the one-drop rule. Dream Sequence Over:  From a waking perspective, this made no sense. I have many cousins that look totally white despite having African-American ancestry or an Afr...

Rethinking Isms

Art Is Courtesy of Shellie Summers. Shellie, you rule! Why Racism Might not be the Right Word : In my last dream post titled " Tempest or Zephyr ," I, as an African American, found myself wrestling with the word “racism” after waking from that dream; it seemed to me that it may have lost its meaning. Let me explain; the definition of racism is based not solely on the color of a person's skin but on the ethnic and racial group that that person belongs to. For example, there is a difference between being born among the Wind-Riders as a Zephyr Wind-Rider instead of a Tempest Wind-Rider. They are both Wind-Riders, but they are different tribes. Perhaps, Tempest-Riders are best known to be very strong and potentially dangerous, so if they see me, a Zephyr riding the wind without any investigation, it would be easy to assume that I am potentially a dangerous Tempest-Rider. These concepts crossed my mind as the dream gave me memories that said Wind-Riders were bound...

Tempest or Zephyr?

Art is courtesy of the talented Shellie Summers! In a dream I woke from on July 28th, I found myself perplexed. I laid in bed for a while, trying to process what I had just experienced.  The dream centered around a society that was full of magic and that had once been ruled by a powerful monarch whose presence hovered over the nation that was in fear of his return. I was born into this society as a "Wind-rider," a group of people who had the power to stir up and ride the wind. Wind-riders were commonly known to be thieves, pirates, and just plain criminals with their wind-guided mobility, balance, and flight capabilities. Even though I was still in school, my peers and classmates looked at me as if I was a delinquent before I had even the chance to raise a draft or stir up a breeze.  During the dream, I partook in a quest of my own accord to retrieve some lost artifacts for a young child who had not yet possessed the agility or magical knowledge to retrieve them for himself a...

Passionless Bliss

Art is Courtesy of an Amazing Artist, My Friend Shellie Summers! I am not afraid of death because death is invisible." If I can't see where it is going or witness what it is doing, is it doing anything at all? For my first post, I would like to start with the dream that inspired me to start writing in the first place. This dream took place on July 1st, 2020; I hope you find it interesting. I suddenly became aware of my surroundings during a dream. It was as if I had woken up from an episode of sleepwalking and found myself seated in the back of something like a white fleet finch plane. Military jets and alien machines were all around us, fighting to control the skies; despite their best efforts, humanity was losing. The battle was fierce, and hope for survival faded with every passing second. Flying was so dangerous that I bailed from the plane and parachuted toward the ground in search of somewhere away from all the action. It wasn’t a parachute I was using but a glider of so...
